2002 Chevrolet Avalanche
2003, 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche
One of the most innovative is the Chevrolet Avalanche. Avalanche begins with the same basic chassis as the Chevy Silverado, a solid and rugged pickup that also serves as base for the redesigned Chevy Tahoe sport-utility. With the Avalanche, you get a four-door sport-utility cabin mated to a shortened, 5-foot, 3-inch cargo bed.
If you'd like the option of hauling a full sheet of plywood, don't despair. The bed can be quickly extended to 8 feet. The back of the SUV-like passenger compartment is actually a foldable gate that further expands storage. And there's a three-piece, removable cargo cover effectively transforming the Avalanche bed into an oversized, lockable trunk.
Chevy designed the Avalanche to exude "the feeling of high-end mountain-climbing equipment." The prototype, which is making its way around the auto show circuit, features a variety of options, including an aggressive array of lights and body cladding. Chevy promises the production version to be equally impressive.
