Cherokee (code name XJ) started the modern SUV revolution over 15 years ago with the introduction of the 1984 Cherokee. Since that time, many have tried to imitate this pioneer, but none have combined the off-road readiness with the value that defines Cherokee.
Cherokee was the first vehicle in its class available with the choice of two or four doors and two- or four-wheel drive. The 2003 Cherokee continues this tradition with the same product offerings that first made it such a revolutionary vehicle.
Jeep Cherokee has seating for up to five people and their gear. A full-floor center console is standard on all models. Front passengers have reclining bucket seats, and height-adjustable seat belts with traveling inboard buckles. And Cherokee's rear bench includes an easy to operate folding seatback. Jeep® Cherokee was the first vehicle in its class to offer two four-wheel-drive systems: the part-time Command-Trac® and the full-time Selec-Trac® 4WD systems.
Both 4WD systems can be shifted into four-wheel-drive high range on-the-fly at speeds up to 55 mph, and both have a four-wheel-drive low range allowing greater control in severe low-traction situations such as heavy snow or exteme trail riding. Both also feature a neutral position for recreational towing of your Cherokee behind another vehicle. Selec-Trac® has the added feature of a full-time 4WD mode that can be used over any surface.
Cherokee's off-road equipment includes high ground clearance and the Quadra-Link Suspension that helps maintain stability and control. Front coil springs, coupled with four locating arms and a solid front axle (4WD models), deliver precise handling, stability, and control.
